Trans - Canada Air Lines was created by the Government of Canada, as a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railways Corporation to provide trans-continental airline service within Canada’s borders. Its first passenger service on 1 September 1937 was, however, operated on the Vancouver - Seattle route, previously operated by Canadian Airways.
Following the hugely successful operation of Vickers Viscounts, Trans - Canada Air Lines ordered twenty Vickers Vanguard V.952s on 3 January 1957, in a deal worth £23.9m ( $67.1m ) with spares, ( Works Order No. 53C ), and options on a further four, £4.2m ( $11.7m ). Three of these were taken up on 21 May 1960 ( Works Order No. 56C issued 8 July 1960).
Trans - Canada Air Lines became Air Canada on 1 June 1964, though the Enabling Act was not passed until 1 January 1965.
